Originating from Silindung, Tumtuman is a versatile type of ulos that can be modified using various motifs, even those borrowed from other cultures. This particular ulu torus and pucca mix is influenced by Malay songket traditions. Traditionally, it is used as a tali tali or headwrap by the host’s (hasuhutan) firstborn son to denote his status during ceremonies. Nowadays, it is most commonly used as a sarong and shawl by women in formal settings, especially weddings.
