Originating from Silindung, Tumtuman is a versatile type of ulos that can be modified using various motifs, even those borrowed from other cultures. Traditionally, it is used as a tali tali or headwrap by the host’s (hasuhutan) firstborn son to denote his status during ceremonies. Nowadays, it is most commonly used as a sarong and shawl by women in formal settings, especially weddings.
