Every 21 April, Indonesia commemorates Kartini Day, honouring the legacy of R.A. Kartini and her enduring pursuit of women's rights, equal opportunities, and education. More than a historical remembrance, Kartini's spirit continues to inspire Indonesian women today. It lives on in the skilled hands of women handweavers across North Sumatra, who transform Batak handwoven textiles into more than beautiful works of art, as expressions of cultural heritage, sources of livelihood, and symbols of resilience passed down through generations.
The women weavers of North Sumatra embody the spirit of Kartini in the present day. Their role in preserving Indonesia's rich textile heritage is both vital and enduring. Weaving is a skill inherited across generations, nurtured from adolescence into adulthood. Within every carefully woven thread lies a story of perseverance of women supporting their families, raising their children, sustaining their communities, and safeguarding ancestral knowledge through their craft.
Inspired by this unwavering spirit, Tobatenun launched the #PerempuanDirayakan (Women Celebrated) campaign, a movement dedicated to recognising, supporting, and empowering women weavers in the Lake Toba region, alongside women from all walks of life across Indonesia. The campaign celebrates the contributions of women in every sphere of society while advocating for inclusive spaces, equal opportunities, and the freedom for women to express themselves and flourish.
In collaboration with Jabu Bonang, Tobatenun remains committed to creating more opportunities for the partonun—the women weavers of Batak handwoven textiles—to continue practising their craft while strengthening their livelihoods. The campaign also brings together a diverse group of inspiring women who embody the spirit of #PerempuanDirayakan, reflecting the strength, resilience, and diversity of Indonesian women who continue to shape meaningful change.
Through the celebration of Kartini Day and this ongoing campaign, Tobatenun invites everyone to stand alongside Indonesian women, especially women handweavers, in advocating for equal rights, safe and inclusive spaces, and opportunities to build dignified livelihoods through their craft. Because, at its heart, every woman deserves to be celebrated.
